The Society was founded in 1877 and is one of the oldest charities providing support for visually impaired people in the United Kingdom.
We currently have over 3,000 members and this figure is growing quickly.
The Society offers a wide range of services including a professional counselling service, IT and assistive technology teaching, help with welfare benefit applications, housing advice, Living with Sight loss courses, visual awareness and sighted guiding training, various support groups including a Men’s Group and a Macular Support Group, sporting activities, healthy lifestyle activities such as healthy walks, armchair aerobics, dietary advice and healthy cooking, a befriending service, volunteer car drivers to assist with transport and a wide range of social activities.
The Society also delivers both the sight loss and hearing loss Rehabilitation service on behalf of Sunderland City Council. This includes sensory assessments, independent living skills and mobility training.
Our office base at 53, St Luke’s Terrace, Pallion, Sunderland is open Monday to Friday between 9:30am and 3pm. Anyone interested in visual impairment is welcome to call in for a cup of tea or coffee and a chat.
