Durham Wildlife Trust under the Links with Nature project and Natural England are working alongside Sunderland City Council at Elemore Park to co-host this event to promote Green Social Prescribing* in the Coalfields area.

*Green social prescribing is the practice of supporting people to engage in nature-based interventions and activities to improve their mental and physical health. Green social prescribing includes both what is known as green and blue activities. These could include local walking schemes, community gardening projects, conservation volunteering, green gyms, open water swimming or arts and cultural activities which take place outdoors. These activities may be ‘prescribed’ by link workers (and other trusted professionals) alongside other forms of support, for example, referrals to support for housing or finances – based on the needs and circumstances of each individual.

This event takes place on Tuesday 10th September 2024, from 9:30 until 12:30pm at Elemore Park, Elemore Lane, Easington Lane, Sunderland, DH5 0QS.

This event is open to: Health Care Professionals and workers, Carer’s, GP’s, Health Coaches and Champions

Booking is essential as spaces are limited to 20. Please book via our Eventbrite Link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/978198366647?aff=oddtdtcreator

The event offers:

  • An introduction to green social prescribing and benefits of nature for health.
  • A chance to network with peers and take part in facilitated discussions around green social prescribing activities and pathways for the community members.
  • Hot drinks and biscuits.
  • Information about green social prescribing activities available at Elemore Park and further volunteering opportunities for your clients.
  • Hazel Coppicing – Have a go at the traditional skill of coppicing, which is an important woodland management tool helping to open up the woodland canopy and encourage regrowth. All tools and instruction will be provided. Everyone can work at their own pace and enjoy being out in the woods.
  • Willow Weaving – Relax in nature and enjoy therapeutic willow weaving as part of our Green Social Prescribing Taster Event. Learn how to make hoops, stars and dream catchers, whilst taking in the benefits from being outdoors in nature at Elemore Park.
  • An optional guided walk around Elemore Park at the end of the event for those wishing to find out more about the site, it’s history and future plans.

The Links with Nature project has been made possible thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
